Frequently Asked Questions About Umrah (Detailed)

Umrah is a spiritual journey filled with rituals and deep meaning. Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about Umrah, along with detailed answers:

  1. How does one enter Ihram?
  • Before entering Ihram, it is recommended to trim the nails, clean the underarms and pubic area, and, if necessary, groom the hair, beard, and mustache.
  • If possible, one should perform ghusl (ritual washing); if not, regular ablution (wudu) is sufficient. The ghusl performed before entering Ihram is sunnah (highly recommended), but not obligatory.
  • After performing ghusl, unscented oils or perfumes can be applied to the body. However, applying perfume after entering Ihram is forbidden.
  • For men, the Ihram consists of two pieces of white cloth: the izar (lower garment) and rida (upper garment). Women can enter Ihram in their regular modest attire but must leave their faces uncovered.
  • According to the Hanafi school, one must make an intention (niyyah) and recite the talbiyah to enter Ihram. In the Shafi’i school, only the intention is required, and reciting the talbiyah is not obligatory.
  1. What is a Miqat, and where does one enter Ihram?
  • Miqat refers to designated places where pilgrims must enter Ihram for Umrah or Hajj.
  • People coming from outside the Miqat areas must enter Ihram at one of these locations as a sign of respect to the Kaaba.
  • If a pilgrim passes the Miqat without entering Ihram, they must either sacrifice an animal or return to the Miqat to enter Ihram properly.
  • The main Miqat points include:
