December is the most practical month for a family Umrah from the USA: schools are closed, Makkah is at its coolest, and a 9–10 night group trip fits inside the winter break.
The trade-off is demand — late-December seats and Haram-area hotels sell out weeks earlier than any other non-Ramadan month. Book by early October, choose your dates around your school district’s calendar, and pack for cool nights, not desert heat.

Every year in late summer the same message arrives in our WhatsApp: “We want to take the kids for Umrah over winter break — is it too late?” Usually it is not, but the answer depends on when you ask. December Umrah has become the second-largest travel window of the year for Muslim families in North America, after Ramadan, and it behaves like one: seats on the good flights and rooms in the hotels closest to the Haram go first, and the families who book in September travel on the dates they wanted, in the rooms they wanted, at the price they were quoted. This guide covers everything we tell those families — dates, weather, crowds, prices, booking timing, and what makes a December trip work with children and grandparents.
Why December Works So Well for Families
Three things line up in December that do not line up in any other month. First, the calendar: most US public schools close from around December 21–24 through January 1–4 (New York City public schools, for example, are closed December 24, 2026 through January 1, 2027 — check your own district), so a nine or ten night trip costs the children few or no school days. Second, the weather: December and January are the coolest months in Makkah, with daytime highs around 29–32°C (84–90°F) and pleasant evenings — it is the one season when the walk between your hotel and the Haram at 2 p.m. is comfortable, and when Tawaf in the open mataf does not exhaust an older parent. Third, the spiritual calendar: December 2026 falls mostly in the month of Rajab 1448 (expected), one of the four sacred months, and about two months before Ramadan — a quieter, more reflective time in the Haramain than the peaks of Ramadan or the pre-Hajj weeks.
The honest downside is that everyone in North America and Europe knows this. Late December brings a secondary crowd bump to Makkah (smaller than Ramadan, larger than November), holiday-season airfares, and hotels that fill from the Haram outward. None of this is a reason not to go — it is a reason to plan.
December 2026 Dates: How to Choose Yours
| Departure pattern | Typical dates (2026) | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early break | Dec 19–20 out, Dec 28–30 back | Families whose district closes by Dec 18–23; travelers who want to be home before New Year | Children may miss 2–3 school days if your district stays open until Dec 23 |
| Full winter recess | Dec 23–25 out, Jan 1–3 back | NYC-style calendars (closed Dec 24 – Jan 1); zero or minimal missed school | Highest demand and highest fares of the month; book earliest |
| First half of December | Dec 5–15 | Retirees, students, anyone without a school calendar | Fewer group departures; often the best value of the winter |
Hisar Tour’s December 2026 group departures follow the first two patterns: Winter Break and Isabet groups from New York around December 19–20 (9–10 nights), a Toronto group December 19–29, New Year groups from New York and Washington D.C. departing December 23–25 and returning January 1–3, and a Los Angeles departure with December dates to be announced. Exact dates, hotels and prices are on the Umrah packages page.
Weather: What December in Makkah and Madinah Is Really Like
Makkah in late December is warm by day and mild by night — roughly 29–32°C (84–90°F) in the afternoon, dropping to about 18–20°C (64–68°F) before Fajr. Madinah, which sits higher and further north, is noticeably cooler: pleasant days in the low-to-mid 20s°C (70s°F) and nights that can fall toward 10–12°C (50–54°F). Pilgrims who pack only for “Saudi heat” are the ones shivering in the Prophet’s Mosque courtyard at Fajr.*
- Pack a light jacket or shawl for Fajr and Isha, especially in Madinah.
- Men: a light sweater or thermal top under the Ihram is not permitted, but a shawl or blanket over the shoulders while not in Ihram is fine — and a warm layer for the Madinah days is essential.
- Children: layers, closed shoes for ziyarah days, and a hat for midday sun — it is still sunny.
- Occasional December rain is possible; a small umbrella weighs nothing.

Crowds and Prices: What to Expect
December is busier than November and quieter than Ramadan. Expect a fuller mataf after Isha and on Fridays, but nothing like the last ten nights of Ramadan. Prices follow demand: in 2026, Hisar Tour’s November group departures from New York start around $2,950 per person (quad), while comparable December departures start around $3,500 — the difference is almost entirely holiday-season airfare and hotel rates, not a change in what is included.*
| Window | Crowds | Prices | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov 15–30 (Thanksgiving) | Low–moderate | Lower | Couples, adults, families with a short break |
| Dec 1–15 | Low–moderate | Often the winter’s best value | Anyone not tied to a school calendar |
| Dec 19 – Jan 3 | Moderate–high | Highest of the winter (outside Ramadan) | School-age families — the only window that costs no school days |
| Jan 5–31 | Low | Lower | Retirees, students on later breaks, second-time pilgrims |
When to Book — and Why Earlier Beats Cheaper
- August–September. Group departures are published and the closest hotels are held. Booking now means your family gets the room configuration it wants (a double for the parents, a triple for the children) and the flight the group actually flies on. Deposit is typically a percentage of the package price — check the terms.
- Early October. Our practical deadline for December. Airlines release fewer group seats after this and holiday fares rise; late bookers are often placed on different flights from the group or in a further hotel.
- November. Full payment is normally due about 30 days before departure. Waitlists open on sold-out departures; a few late seats sometimes appear as families adjust plans.
- December 1–15. Last-minute December Umrah is possible but usually means individual tickets at holiday prices and whatever hotel is left. If you are reading this in December, message us — we will tell you honestly what is still possible.
Traveling with Children and Grandparents in December
The cool weather makes December the kindest month for the youngest and oldest members of a family. A few things that make the difference in practice:
- Perform Umrah on arrival in Makkah, or after a night’s rest — not straight off a 12-hour flight with tired children
- Choose a hotel within a genuine walk of the Haram; December crowds make shuttle buses slow
- Wheelchairs and electric carts are available at both mosques — arrange support through your group leader in advance
- Two daily meals in the hotel remove the daily “where do we eat” stress with kids
- Bluetooth headsets let parents hear the imam while managing children in Tawaf
- Booking a “cheap” package that seats the family on separate flights
- Planning every hour — leave one free afternoon in each city
- Ihram for small children on the plane; many families enter Ihram at the hotel in Madinah before driving to Makkah
- Skipping the pre-departure webinar — December groups include many first-timers, and the questions are the same every year
What a Hisar Tour December Group Includes
Our December 2026 group departures are built for exactly this traveler — the family, the first-timer, the parent bringing an elderly mother. Packages typically include round-trip flights, hotels within walking distance of the Haram in both cities (named on each package page), daily open-buffet breakfast and dinner, private coach transfers, guided ziyarah in Makkah and Madinah, a qualified imam or group leader with the group throughout, Bluetooth headsets, a pre-departure webinar series, and visa processing. Prices in December 2026 start from about $3,200 per person (quad) from Toronto and $3,500 from New York and Washington D.C., with a Luxury tier from about $3,990.* Triple, double and single rates, and child and infant pricing, are listed on each departure.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is December a good time for Umrah?
Yes — for most families from the USA and Canada it is the best non-Ramadan window. Makkah is at its coolest (daytime around 84–90°F), schools are closed, and 9–10 night group trips fit inside the break. Demand is higher than in November, so book by early October for the best flights and hotels.
How cold does it get in Makkah and Madinah in December?
Makkah stays warm by day, roughly 29–32°C (84–90°F), with nights around 18–20°C (64–68°F). Madinah is cooler — days in the low-to-mid 20s°C (70s°F) and nights that can drop toward 10–12°C (50–54°F). Bring a light jacket or shawl for Fajr and Isha.
How much does a December Umrah package from the USA cost?
In 2026, Hisar Tour’s December group departures start from about $3,200 per person (quad) from Toronto and $3,500 from New York and Washington D.C., with a Luxury tier from about $3,990. These include flights, hotels near the Haram, breakfast and dinner, transfers, ziyarah, and an imam-led group. Prices vary by room type and change as seats sell; see the packages page for current rates.
When should I book a December Umrah?
By early October at the latest. Group flight seats for the holiday weeks and the closest hotels are typically committed by then. Booking in August or September gives you your preferred departure date and room configuration; late bookers are often placed on separate flights or in further hotels.
Is Umrah crowded in late December?
Busier than November, much quieter than Ramadan. Expect a fuller mataf after Isha and on Fridays, and more families with children. Performing Tawaf after Fajr or late at night is the easy way to avoid the peaks.
Can we do Umrah in December with young children and elderly parents?
December is the kindest month for both. The cool weather makes walking and Tawaf far easier, wheelchairs are available at both mosques (arrange support through your group leader in advance), and a hotel within a real walking distance of the Haram matters more than any other feature.
*Weather figures are typical seasonal ranges, not forecasts.
