The last ten nights, when Makkah is at its fullest, are expected to start on the evening of Saturday, February 27. Saudi Arabia confirms the exact dates by moon sighting, so any of them can move by a day. The date most planners miss is administrative: the last day an Umrah visa can be issued this season is expected to be Eid day itself.

If you are weighing Umrah in Ramadan 2027, you are really making three decisions: which part of the month to go, how much crowding you and your family can handle, and when the money and paperwork need to be in place. This guide takes them in that order. Every 2027 date below is an estimate from the Umm al-Qura calendar and is marked with an asterisk.
Ramadan 2027 Dates, Night by Night
An Islamic night begins at sunset and belongs to the day that follows it. That is why the 27th night of Ramadan 2027 starts on the evening of Friday, March 5, not on Saturday. Many planning guides mix the two up, and the mistake matters when you are booking hotel nights around a specific night.

First, Middle or Last Ten Days?
The best part of Ramadan for your Umrah depends on who is travelling. The last ten nights carry the search for Laylat al-Qadr and draw the largest crowds of the year. The first twenty days are calmer, cheaper and far kinder to older parents and children, and the fast and the Taraweeh are the same.

A useful rule: if anyone in your party needs a wheelchair, tires after short walks, or cannot manage broken sleep, plan around the first twenty days. How Crowded Ramadan Umrah Really Gets
Ramadan is the busiest Umrah month of the year, and the official figures show how quickly it fills. The General Authority for the Care of the Two Holy Mosques counted 8,110,498 Umrah performers at the Grand Mosque in the first ten days of Ramadan 1447 (2026), and 15,605,086 by day 20. Across the whole of Ramadan 1446 (2025) the count was 16,558,241, and on the 29th night that year the Grand Mosque received 4,117,669 people.
What that means on the ground:
- The mataf floor is reserved for Umrah. In Ramadan 1447 the ground floor around the Kaaba was set aside for people performing Umrah. Everyone else prays on upper floors, in the courtyards or on the roads outside when the building is full.
- Prayer space fills hours before Isha on the odd nights of the last ten. Screens at the entrances direct people to other areas once a section is full.

The Rules That Shape a Ramadan Trip
Two different kinds of rule apply to a Ramadan Umrah, and it helps to keep them apart. One is religious teaching about the reward of Umrah in Ramadan. The other is Saudi administration: permits, visas and crowd control, which change from season to season.
- The Prophet ﷺ said Umrah in Ramadan is equal to Hajj in reward (Sahih al-Bukhari 1782; Sahih Muslim 1256). Scholars explain this as equal in reward; it does not replace the obligation of Hajj.
- Laylat al-Qadr is sought in the odd nights of the last ten (Sahih al-Bukhari 2017), and it is “better than a thousand months” (Qur’an 97:3).
- An Umrah permit booked in the Nusuk app, for a set time slot.
- In recent Ramadans, one Umrah per person: in 2024 Nusuk would not issue a second permit, and in 2025 pilgrims were asked to perform Umrah only once in the last ten days.
- A Rawdah visit in Madinah booked in Nusuk. In the last ten days of 2026, women’s hours were 6 to 11 am only.
Visas and the season calendar
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah has set the 1448 Umrah season: visas from May 31, 2026, last Umrah visa issuance on March 9, 2027 (1 Shawwal), last entry on March 23 and last departure on April 7, 2027. A Ramadan trip therefore sits inside the season, but the visa must be issued before Eid. I’tikaf is not open to visitors through the official system
Registration for official i’tikaf spots at the two Holy Mosques opens early in Ramadan through a Saudi e-service that requires a Saudi identity login, and the 2025 and 2026 announcements limited it to citizens and residents. Visitors from North America can still spend the nights in worship, but should not plan a trip around an official i’tikaf place.
Why Ramadan Umrah Costs More
Ramadan packages cost more because hotel rooms near the Haram are the scarcest thing in Makkah that month, and the last ten nights are the scarcest of all. Flights, visas and meals change far less than rooms do. Arab News reported central Makkah hotels at 100% occupancy in the last ten days of Ramadan 2023. In 2026 the pattern briefly reversed: regional flight disruptions pushed some hotels to discount Ramadan rates by up to 50%. The lesson is that Ramadan prices follow demand, not a fixed surcharge.
When you compare Ramadan packages, compare the contents rather than the headline price:
- Which nights are in Makkah. Two packages with the same length can place very different numbers of nights inside the last ten.
- Real walking distance. In the last ten, a hotel 700 m away can mean 20 minutes or more each way at prayer time, twice a night.
- Suhoor and iftar. Standard breakfast and dinner times do not fit a fasting schedule. Ask when and where meals are served.
- Room occupancy. The price per person in a quad and a double can differ a lot. Our room occupancy guide shows the math.
When to Book, Working Backward From February
For a February or March 2027 departure, the practical booking window is autumn 2026. Rooms near the Haram are the scarcest part of a Ramadan trip, group flights are priced months ahead, and the visa and permit steps take time in January. - December 2026. Group flights are ticketed and rooming lists are set. Ask for your nights by city in writing.

- February 2027. Departures. A group for the last ten nights needs to be in Makkah before sunset on Saturday, February 27*.
- March 9, 2027*. Expected Eid al-Fitr and the last day an Umrah visa can be issued this season.
Families and Older Parents: Ramadan Adjustments
Fasting while travelling is a real question on a Ramadan Umrah, and it has a religious answer and a practical one. The Qur’an allows a traveller to make up missed fasts later: “whoever is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days” (Qur’an 2:185). Whether that concession applies on the days you are staying in Makkah or Madinah is a question schools answer differently, so ask your scholar or group imam before you go.
The practical side is kinder in 2027 than in a summer Ramadan. February highs in Makkah typically run in the mid-to-high 80s °F and nights drop into the 60s, and the fast from Fajr to Maghrib is about 13 hours in early March. For older parents:
- If anyone has diabetes, the Saudi Ministry of Health advises seeing a doctor 6 to 8 weeks before Ramadan.
- Plan Umrah itself for a quieter hour, and use the wheelchair and cart services at the Grand Mosque rather than walking the full rites in peak crowds.
- For women visiting the Rawdah in the last ten days, book the morning slot in Nusuk early.
