These dates follow astronomical calculations of the Islamic lunar calendar. Final confirmation comes with the official sighting of the Dhul Hijjah moon in Saudi Arabia — roughly ten days before Hajj begins.

Hajj always takes place on the same Islamic dates — the 8th to the 13th of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Hijri calendar. But because the Islamic calendar is lunar, each Hijri year is about 10–11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. That is why Hajj moves earlier each year on the Western calendar: Hajj 2026 fell in late May, and Hajj 2027 is expected in mid-May.
The exact start of Dhul Hijjah depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon, announced by Saudi authorities. Until that announcement, every published date — including ours — is a careful estimate, usually accurate to within a day.
