Hajj Badal at a glance
Hajj Badal (also called proxy Hajj, hajj al-badal or hac bedel) is a Hajj performed by one person on behalf of another who cannot perform it: someone who has passed away, or someone who is permanently unable because of old age or an illness with no hope of recovery. At Hisar Tour, the Hajj is performed by one of our qualified imams from the USA who has already performed his own Hajj. He travels on an official Nusuk Hajj package, makes the intention in your loved one's name, and performs one Hajj Badal for one person in a season. Who can Hajj Badal be performed for?
Hajj Badal is for a Muslim who can no longer perform Hajj in person. It is not a shortcut for someone who is able to go.
It can be performed for
- A parent, grandparent or relative who has passed away, whether or not they had performed Hajj
- Someone living who is permanently unable to travel for Hajj: advanced age, or an illness with no expected recovery
- A loved one who asked for it, or left it in their will
It is not meant for
- A temporary illness or injury. If recovery is expected, the person can still go themselves later
- Someone who is able to travel but prefers not to
- Two people at once: one Hajj is performed for one person only
Scholars and schools of thought differ on some details, for example whether a living person must have asked for it. If you are unsure, ask your own scholar, or talk it through with one of our imams before you decide. Sources for the conditions above are listed in the notes.2
Our imams: scholars who go to Hajj every season
Hisar Tour works with a team of 10 to 15 qualified imams in the USA. They travel for Hajj every year, to guide and serve the pilgrims in our groups, and each of them can perform Hajj Badal for one person in a season.
Every imam who performs Hajj Badal with us has already performed his own Hajj, so the Hajj he performs now is entirely for your loved one.
He departs from the USA like any of our pilgrims. You can speak with him before the season, and where possible meet him in person.
While he performs Hajj for your loved one, he also serves the guests of Allah in our groups. We ask Allah to accept it and to reward your loved one, your family and the imam many times over.

At ihram he makes the intention for your loved one, then performs Arafah, Muzdalifah, Mina, the Jamarat, Tawaf and Sa'i on their behalf.

No. One Hajj is performed for one person. Each imam performs Hajj Badal for one person in a season, which is why places are limited and why we ask families to pre-register early. If you would like Hajj performed for two relatives, two imams are needed, or it is done over two seasons.
The cost is the price of the Hajj package the imam travels on, purchased through the official Nusuk Hajj platform. Package prices are set each season, so an advisor shares the current amount when they call you. Pre-registration itself is free.
Yes. Our imams live in the USA, so you can speak with the imam before the season. If you would like to give the vekalet (authorization) face to face, tell us in the form and we arrange an in-person meeting where possible.
Scholars permit a man to perform Hajj on behalf of a woman, and a woman on behalf of a man.2 Our imams can perform Hajj Badal for your mother, grandmother or another female relative.
If the illness is lasting and there is no expected recovery, or old age makes the journey impossible, Hajj Badal can be performed for them. If recovery is expected, scholars say the person should wait and perform Hajj themselves when able. Tell us about the situation in the form and we will talk it through with you. If you are unsure, please also ask your own scholar.

- The hadith of Shubrumah. The Prophet ﷺ heard a man say “Labbayk ʿan Shubrumah” (here I am on behalf of Shubrumah) and asked whether he had performed his own Hajj; he told him to perform his own Hajj first, then Hajj for Shubrumah. Sunan Abi Dawud 1811.
