Madinah’s central area is the ring of hotels that opens directly onto the courtyards of the Prophet’s Mosque, and a hotel inside it puts you 100 to 600 meters from a numbered gate: one to eight minutes on foot, on flat ground, with no street to cross.
Distance matters less in Madinah than in Makkah because the walk is flat and shaded, but the side of the mosque matters more: the women’s entrances, the Rawdah queue and Al-Baqi are each on a different side. Most first-time pilgrims from the USA and Canada spend three or four nights in Madinah before Makkah, and almost every question they ask about the hotel is really a question about the mosque: which door, which side, how early, and whether the walk is safe alone at 4 a.m. This guide answers those questions with the mosque’s own numbers, then explains what “central area” means on a package page, how the Rawdah permit works, how far the Ziyarah sites are from the hotel, and which hotels Hisar Tour books in each tier.
What “Central Area” Means on a Madinah Package Page
“Central area” (in Arabic, al-Markaziyah) means the hotels and streets that surround the Prophet’s Mosque’s courtyards, inside the ring roads, where the ground is pedestrian and the mosque is visible from the door. No official English definition or radius exists; in practice a hotel is “central” if you walk to the courtyard without crossing a vehicle road, and “near the central area” if you cross one. The Madinah Region Development Authority has built air-conditioned underground pedestrian crossings with escalators under the main roads, including two 125-meter tunnels under King Faisal Road, so the northern hotels beyond the ring road now reach the courtyards without waiting at a traffic light.
The courtyards themselves are large: about 235,000 square meters after the second expansion, with 250 automated umbrellas and 436 mist fans that shade more than 228,000 people at once. A hotel “100 meters from the mosque” is 100 meters from the edge of that courtyard. Your gate, and the prayer hall you actually pray in, may be a further two to five minutes across the marble, which is pleasant in December and needs the umbrellas in June.
Which Side of the Mosque Your Hotel Should Be On
The side of the Prophet’s Mosque decides your daily walk more than the meters do, because the women’s prayer sections, the Rawdah entrance, Al-Baqi cemetery and the historic gates are each on a specific side. The mosque’s gates are all numbered, and the General Presidency lists gates 25, 29 and 41 as the entrances for women; the main northern entrance is the King Fahd Gate; Bab al-Salam is on the western side and Bab Jibril on the eastern side, next to Al-Baqi.

A practical rule for a family: choose the east or north-east side so that the women in the group enter at gate 25, 29 or 41 without walking around the entire complex, and accept that the men will walk a few minutes further to the Rawdah. A practical rule for an elderly parent: choose the smallest number of meters on any side, and use the wheelchair-accessible gates the Ministry of Hajj lists, including Al-Salam, Bab al-Baqi, Bab Jibril, King Fahd and gates 25, 29 and 41. The real-time occupancy map on the mosque’s e-services site (green, yellow and red for each of twelve areas) tells you before you leave the hotel which hall still has space.
The Rawdah Permit: How It Works from Your Hotel
A visit to the Rawdah, the area between the Prophet’s house and his pulpit, requires a free permit booked in the Nusuk app, and since December 2025 each person may hold one permit every 365 days. Entry is managed through the southern courtyards in front of Makkah Gate 37. The Saudi Press Agency’s December 5, 2025 report gives the daily hours: men from 2:00 a.m. until Fajr and again from 11:20 a.m. until Isha; women after Fajr until 11:00 a.m. and after Isha until 2:00 a.m. On Fridays men have an extra slot from 9:20 to 11:20 a.m. and after the Friday prayer until Isha, and women’s morning slot ends at 9:00 a.m. Ramadan and Hajj-season schedules are published separately each year.
How Far the Ziyarah Sites Are from a Central-Area Hotel
Every major Ziyarah site in Madinah is within about four kilometers of the Prophet’s Mosque, which is why a central-area hotel doubles as the base for the whole city. Al-Baqi cemetery adjoins the mosque’s south-eastern wall, about 180,000 square meters of it, and is visited after Fajr and after Asr as commonly posted at its gate; check the times on the day. Quba Mosque is about 3.5 kilometers away, connected by a 3-kilometer walking trail with golf-cart lanes built by the Madinah Development Authority, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that whoever purifies himself at home, comes to Quba and prays there has the reward of an Umrah (Sunan Ibn Majah 1412). Mount Uhud and the Qiblatayn Mosque are each about four kilometers away.

Hisar groups make the Ziyarah as one guided coach day with the imam narrating each site, which matters more in Madinah than anywhere else: Uhud is a hillside and a cemetery unless someone explains the battle, and Quba is a large white mosque unless someone explains why the Prophet rode there every Saturday. The exact order is set by the imam according to the prayer times and the heat.
Madinah Weather by Season, and What It Does to the Walk
Madinah is drier and a few degrees cooler than Makkah, with December averages of about 14°C at night and 26°C by day (57–79°F), February and March at 14–17°C and 27–31°C, and summer days of 43–44°C (110°F) from June to August. In winter the walk from any central-area hotel is the easiest walk of the whole trip; in summer the courtyard umbrellas and the underground crossings are the route, and a 600-meter hotel becomes a 600-meter decision. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin in early February, subject to moon sighting, which puts it in Madinah’s mildest weeks.

Five Questions to Ask Before You Book a Madinah Hotel
- Which side of the mosque is the entrance on? East or north-east for families with women in the group; south for men who want the Rawdah at 2 a.m.; the fewest meters for anyone elderly.
- Do I cross a vehicle road? If yes, ask whether the underground crossing is on the route; if the answer is a shrug, the agency has not walked it.
- Is the hotel named, or “or similar,” and when is it confirmed? Accept a replacement only in the same star band and the same distance band, with the name given before you fly.
- Are breakfast and dinner at the hotel? The central area’s restaurants are plentiful but slow at prayer time; a hotel dinner after Isha is the difference between eating at 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Not for most adults. Six hundred meters is about eight minutes at a normal pace on flat, mostly shaded ground, and the last stretch is the mosque courtyard itself. It is a sensible saving for fit travelers; for an elderly parent or a family with a stroller, a hotel inside the first ring is worth the difference.
How far is Quba Mosque from the hotels near the Prophet’s Mosque?
About 3.5 kilometers. A 3-kilometer walking trail with golf-cart lanes links the two mosques, and most groups go by coach as part of the guided Ziyarah day. A prayer in Quba after purifying at home has the reward of an Umrah according to the hadith in Sunan Ibn Majah 1412.
Is it safe to walk to the mosque alone for Fajr?
The central area is pedestrian, lit and busy before every prayer, including Fajr, and security staff are present at the gates around the clock. Women in Hisar Tour groups usually walk together with others from the group at the same time; the imam sets a meeting point on the first evening.
Can I take the Haramain train from Madinah to Makkah instead of the coach?
Yes. The Madinah station is about 7 kilometers from the Prophet’s Mosque in Knowledge Economic City, and the journey to Makkah takes roughly two and a half hours depending on the service. Most Hisar Tour groups travel by private coach so that the group can stop at the Miqat mosque at Dhul-Hulayfah to enter Ihram together.
