“Per person, quad occupancy” is the first line of most Umrah price lists and the first thing a first-time traveler misreads. This guide defines the three room types, shows the arithmetic behind the price gap, explains who you actually share with, describes what a four-bed room in Makkah or Madinah looks like, and then helps families, couples, solo travelers and elderly parents choose. What Quad, Triple and Double Mean

Quad, triple and double describe how many people sleep in one hotel room, and every price on an Umrah package page is the price of one bed in that room, not the price of the room. The Nusuk Hajj platform uses the clearest wording in the industry: “a bed in a shared quadruple room,” “a bed in a shared triple room,” “a bed in a shared double room,” and “a bed in a single room.” Umrah packages sold in the USA and Canada mean the same thing when they write “Quad $2,950.”

The word “sharing” is the key. When a page says “quad sharing,” it means you are buying one of four beds, and if you do not bring three companions, the agency assigns the other three from the same group, same gender. When it says “double,” it means two, and for a married couple it means the couple. The hotel does not change: a quad room at the Address Hotel is a room at the Address Hotel with four beds in it.

Why a Bed in a Quad Costs Less: The Math

A bed in a quad costs less because the hotel charges for the room, and the package divides that room charge by the number of people in it. If a room costs R per night, each of four people pays R divided by four, each of three pays R divided by three, and each of two pays R divided by two; the flights, visa, meals, coach and guidance cost exactly the same for every one of them. Hotel nights are one of the largest cost lines in a package with hotels near the Haram, so occupancy is the biggest lever on the per-person price after the hotel choice itself.

Hisar Tour’s November New York departure shows the effect in real numbers: a quad bed is $2,950, a triple bed $3,050 and a double bed $3,250 for the same seven nights, the same Valy Madinah and Address hotels, the same nonstop Saudia flight and the same imam.* The $300 between quad and double is what two fewer people in the room costs each of the two who remain, spread over seven nights: about $43 per night per person. On the nine-night Comfort departure from Toronto the gap is $400, because there are more nights to divide. The math is not a mark-up; it is a division.

Who You Share With

You share with the people you book with; if you book alone, you share with same-gender pilgrims from the same group, assigned by the operator. A family of four books one quad and fills it. Two couples book two doubles. A father and his two adult sons book a triple. A woman traveling alone books a quad bed and is placed with three other women from the group, usually of a similar age when the rooming list allows; a man traveling alone is placed with three other men. Mixed rooms are booked only for married couples and their children, and Saudi Arabia has not required a mahram for women performing Umrah since the Hajj Minister’s announcement in October 2022, so solo women booking a shared bed is normal.

Nusuk’s Hajj packages carry a sentence that also applies, in practice, to every group Umrah: service providers “will make an effort to accommodate rooming preferences to the best of their ability. However, it should be noted that the selection of roommates is not guaranteed.” A good agency tells you the same thing before you pay, then tells you your roommates’ names before you fly. In Hisar Tour groups the rooming list is built by the office from the registration forms, women’s rooms are kept together on the same floor where the hotel allows, and the imam has the list on the coach; ask us for the names if you want them in advance.

What a Quad Room in Makkah or Madinah Actually Looks Like

A quad room in Makkah or Madinah is usually an ordinary hotel room of 30 to 40 square meters with four separate single beds, or two double beds, and one bathroom. The hotels’ own pages are the honest source: the Anwar Al Madinah Mövenpick lists a “Superior 4 Single Beds” room of 39 square meters for four adults and a “Classic 3 Beds” room of 31 square meters for three; the Elaf Taiba in Madinah lists a “Standard Quad” of 29.6 square meters with four beds; the Jabal Omar Hyatt Regency in Makkah lists 38-square-meter rooms in twin, king, triple and quad layouts. The Jabal Omar Marriott, by contrast, says its deluxe rooms take “up to 2 adults and 2 children, and cannot accommodate 4 adults,” which is a useful warning: not every room a hotel calls a four-person room is a four-adult quad.

Four adults, four suitcases and four sets of Ihram in 30 square meters is tight, and the honest downside of a quad is the bathroom queue before Fajr and the luggage on the floor, not the beds. Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Tourism classification criteria require extra floor area for each additional bed and cap rooms at four beds, so “quad” is the largest legitimate sharing arrangement; a package offering “5-sharing” or “6-sharing” is describing something the classification does not recognize, and you should ask what it is.

• Ask “four separate beds, or two double beds?” Two double beds means sharing a mattress with a stranger unless you booked with family. Most Makkah and Madinah quads are four singles; a few are two doubles.
• Ask whether an extra bed is a rollaway. A “triple” that is a double room plus a folding bed is smaller and cheaper for the hotel than a purpose-built triple.
• Bring one suitcase each, and pack a soft bag for the Haram. The floor space, not the bed, is what runs out. Our packing list from the USA is built around one checked bag.
• Agree a bathroom order on the first night. The one rule that makes a quad work is a Fajr rota; the imam’s wake-up call is the same for everyone.

Families with Children: How Occupancy Is Counted

A child who needs a bed counts toward the room’s occupancy, and a child who sleeps in a crib or shares a parent’s bed is usually priced on a separate child rate; the rule differs by hotel and by age, so the age of every child must be on the booking form before a price is quoted. Two parents and two children in one room is a quad in most hotels, with a child rate for the younger two. Two parents and three children is not a quad; it is a quad plus a bed the hotel does not have, and the answer is two rooms, a connecting pair where the hotel offers one, or a triple plus a double.

Hisar Tour’s Winter Break departure lists child discounts on the package page, and every family booking goes through the office rather than the online form so that the ages, beds and rooms are agreed before the deposit.* Note that the rules for Hajj are different: the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah did not allow children to accompany pilgrims for Hajj 2025, and Hajj rooming follows the Nusuk package categories rather than an agency’s choice.

Solo Travelers: Sharing or the Single Supplement

A solo traveler has two choices: accept a bed in a shared room, or pay a single supplement for a room alone. Single rooms are rare in Makkah and Madinah group blocks; Nusuk says of Hajj that “some service providers may offer single rooms. However, the majority of rooms will be offered on a sharing basis,” and Umrah group allotments are the same. Where a single is available, the traveler pays for the beds that stay empty, which is why the supplement is large. Hisar Tour quotes single rooms on request and, honestly, recommends the quad or triple to most solo first-timers: the room is where you sleep, the mosque is where you spend the day, and the roommates are the people you will do Tawaf with at 1 a.m.

What US Advertising Rules Require of the Price

Under US Department of Transportation rule 14 CFR 399.84, any advertisement for a tour that combines air transportation with ground accommodation must state the entire price the customer will pay, shown on a per-passenger basis. A package page that lists “$2,950 quad” must therefore mean $2,950 per person, all in, for a bed in a quad room; taxes and mandatory fees cannot appear later. Since May 2025 the Federal Trade Commission’s rule on unfair or deceptive fees also requires lodging to show the total price including mandatory fees up front. Neither rule tells an agency which occupancy to advertise, so the lowest number on a page is almost always the quad.
